‘Jana Gana Mana’ turns 100!

Mumbai: December 27, 2011 will not only be remembered as the day when Anna Hazare took Mumbai by storm with his fast against corruption. This is also the day when India's national anthem – 'Jana Gana Mana' turned 100 years old.

Rabindranath Tagore's 'Jana Gana Mana' was first performed on December 27, 1911, at the Calcutta Session of the Indian National Congress which underscored a national movement. The Constituent Assembly adopted 'Jana Gana Mana' as the national anthem on January 24, 1950.


Interestingly, Tagore's 'Jana Gana Mana' overruled Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay's 'Vande Mataram' in the face of Muslim opposition, thereby becoming the national anthem of India.

Written in Sanskritised Bengali, 'Jana Gana Mana' ran into controversy when in year 2005, a petition was filed in the Supreme Court demanding the inclusion of the word Kashmir and the deletion of Sindh, which became a part of independent Pakistan after the 1947 partition. However, the Supreme Court ruled against the petition stating that the national anthem is "a hymn or song expressing patriotic sentiments or feelings" and "not a chronicle which defines the territory of the nation".

ജനഗണമന'യ്ക്ക് ഇന്ന് 100

മലപ്പുറം: ഭാരതീയന്റെ ആത്മാവില്‍ ആദരവും അഭിമാനവും നിറയ്ക്കുന്ന ദേശീയഗാനം പിറന്നിട്ട് ചൊവ്വാഴ്ച നൂറ്‌കൊല്ലം തികയുന്നു. 1911 ഡിസംബര്‍ 27ന് കൊല്‍ക്കത്തയില്‍നടന്ന ഇന്ത്യന്‍ നാഷണല്‍ കോണ്‍ഗ്രസ് സമ്മേളനത്തിലാണ് രവീന്ദ്രനാഥ ടാഗോര്‍ ജനഗണമന ആദ്യമായി ആലപിച്ചത്. ബംഗാളിയില്‍ രചിച്ച ആ ഗാനത്തിന് 'ഭാഗ്യവിധാതാ' എന്നാണ് ആദ്യം പേരിട്ടിരുന്നത്.

ശങ്കരാഭരണ രാഗത്തില്‍ രാംസിങ് ഠാക്കൂര്‍ സംഗീതം നല്‍കിയ ഈ ഗാനം പിന്നീട് ഹിന്ദിയിലേക്കും ഇംഗ്ലീഷിലേക്കും മൊഴിമാറ്റി. ഇന്ത്യന്‍ പാര്‍ലമെന്റില്‍ ഈ ഗാനം ആദ്യമായി അവതരിപ്പിച്ചത് 1950 ജനവരി 24നാണ്. ഈ ദിവസമാണ് 'വന്ദേമാതരം' ദേശീയഗാനമായി അംഗീകരിച്ചത്.

ദേശീയഗാനത്തിന്റെ ആദ്യ ഖണ്ഡികയാണ് ഇപ്പോള്‍ ആലപിക്കുന്നത്.ടാഗോറിന്റെ നൂറ്റിയമ്പതാം ജന്മവാര്‍ഷികമാഘോഷിക്കുന്ന വേളയില്‍ത്തന്നെ ദേശീയഗാനത്തിന്റെ നൂറാം വാര്‍ഷികവും വന്നുവെന്നതും ശ്രദ്ധേയം. ടാഗോര്‍ എഴുതിയ 'അമര്‍ ഷൊനാര്‍ ബംഗ്ല' എന്ന കവിതയാണ് ബംഗ്ലാദേശിന്റെ ദേശീയഗാനം.

നാല് എന്‍ജിനിയറിങ് വിദ്യാര്‍ഥികള്‍ നേത്രാവതിയില്‍ മുങ്ങിമരിച്ചു

മംഗലാപുരം: ക്രിസ്മസ് അവധിക്ക് കളി കഴിഞ്ഞ് നേത്രാവതിപ്പുഴയില്‍ കുളിക്കാനിറങ്ങിയ സംഘത്തിലെ നാല് മലയാളി എന്‍ജിനിയറിങ് വിദ്യാര്‍ഥികള്‍ മുങ്ങിമരിച്ചു. ഒരു വിദ്യാര്‍ഥി രക്ഷപ്പെട്ടു. അപകടത്തില്‍പ്പെട്ടവരെല്ലാം കൊനാജെക്കടുത്ത ബ്യാരി ഇന്‍സ്റ്റിറ്റിയൂട്ട് ഓഫ് ടെക്‌നോളജിയിലെ ഒന്നാം വര്‍ഷ വിദ്യാര്‍ഥികളാണ്.

തലശ്ശേരിക്കടുത്ത ചൊക്ലിയിലെ അബ്ദുള്‍ഖാദര്‍-നജ്മ ദമ്പതിമാരുടെ മകന്‍ സുബ്ഹാന്‍ (18), കൂത്തുപറമ്പ് മൂന്നാംപീടിക ടി.പി.ഹൗസിലെ ഉസ്മാന്‍-സുഹറ ദമ്പതിമാരുടെ മകന്‍ സഫ്‌വാന്‍ (18), നീലേശ്വരം മാര്‍ക്കറ്റ്‌റോഡിലെ ചീനമ്മാടത്ത് വീട്ടില്‍ ഹാരിസ് മുഹമ്മദ്-റഹിയാനത്ത് ദമ്പതിമാരുടെ മകന്‍ മുഹമ്മദ് ഷിഫാസ് (18), മലപ്പുറം പരപ്പനങ്ങാടിയിലെ ചെറമംഗലത്തെ മഞ്ഞമ്മാട്ടില്‍ നാസര്‍-സുലൈഖ ദമ്പതിമാരുടെ മകന്‍റിനാസ് നാസര്‍ (18) എന്നിവരാണ് മരിച്ചത്. വടകര സ്വദേശി മഷൂഖ് ആണ് രക്ഷപ്പെട്ടത്.

കൊനാജെക്കടുത്ത ഇന്നോളി ബോളിയാര്‍ ഗ്രാമങ്ങള്‍ക്ക് നടുവിലെ ജലക്കക്കട്ടെയില്‍ ഞായറാഴ്ച വൈകീട്ട് ആറുമണിയോടെയാണ് സംഭവം. കോളേജ്ഗ്രൗണ്ടില്‍ ഫുട്‌ബോള്‍ കളി കഴിഞ്ഞ് 12 അംഗ വിദ്യാര്‍ഥിസംഘം കോളേജില്‍നിന്ന് മൂന്ന് കിലോമിറ്റര്‍ ദൂരെയുള്ള ജലക്കക്കട്ടെയില്‍ ചെന്ന് കുളിക്കാനിറങ്ങിയതായിരുന്നു. പുഴയിലെ മുട്ടറ്റം വെള്ളത്തില്‍ കുളിച്ചുകൊണ്ടിരുന്ന സംഘത്തിലെ അഞ്ചുപേര്‍ പത്തടിയോളം ആഴമുള്ള കയത്തില്‍പ്പെട്ടതാണ് അപകട കാരണമെന്ന് പോലീസ് പറഞ്ഞു.

നാല് വിദ്യാര്‍ഥികളുടെയും മൃതദേഹങ്ങള്‍ തിങ്കളാഴ്ച രാവിലെയാണ് കണ്ടെടുത്തത്. വെന്‍ലോക് ജില്ലാ ആസ്പത്രിയില്‍ നടത്തിയ പോസ്റ്റ്‌മോര്‍ട്ടത്തിനുശേഷം ബന്ധുക്കള്‍ മൃതദേഹങ്ങള്‍ ഏറ്റുവാങ്ങി. ബന്ദര്‍ ജൂമാമസ്ജിദില്‍ മയ്യത്ത് നമസ്‌കാരം നിര്‍വഹിച്ചശേഷം അവര്‍ മൃതദേഹങ്ങള്‍ സ്വദേശത്തേക്ക് കൊണ്ടുപോയി.

മരിച്ച സഫ്‌വാന്റെ അച്ഛന്‍ ഉസ്മാന്‍ ന്യൂഡല്‍ഹിയില്‍ സൈന്യത്തിലാണ്. സ്‌കൂള്‍വിദ്യാര്‍ഥിനി ഷംന ഏക സഹോദരിയാണ്.

മരിച്ച മുഹമ്മദ് ഷിഫാസിന്റെ അച്ഛന്‍ ഹാരിസ് മുഹമ്മദ് പയ്യന്നൂര്‍ പെരുമ്പ സ്വദേശിയാണ്. മരക്കച്ചവടം നടത്തുന്നു. എന്‍ജിനിയിങ് വിദ്യാര്‍ഥി ഇഫ്‌സൂര്‍ റഹ്മാന്‍ സഹോദരനും നീലേശ്വരം സെന്‍റ് പീറ്റേഴ്‌സ് സ്‌കൂള്‍ വിദ്യാര്‍ഥിനി ആയിഷ സഹോദരിയുമാണ്.

റിനാസിന്റെ സഹോദരങ്ങള്‍: ഷിഹാസ്, ഷഹനാസ്. സുബ്ഹാന്റെ സഹോദരങ്ങള്‍: നയീമ, സഹല്‍, നാസിഹ. മന്ത്രി കെ.പി.മോഹനന്‍ വീട് സന്ദര്‍ശിച്ചു.

India's Oscar hunt hinges on Rs 2 crore

He's been there, done that. Now, he has to go there and do that again.

Salim Ahmed (39) spent his life's savings and borrowed money from friends to raise Rs 1 crore to make Adaminte Makan Abu, the Malayalam movie made on a shoestring budget that went on to become the surprise National Award winner in May 2011.

Now, he's again scrounging for funds. Ahmed's debut creation is India's official entry in the Best Film in a foreign language category at the 84th edition of the Oscars on February 26 next year.
He needs Rs 2 crore to promote his film with the 6,000 members of the US-based Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences who will judge his film and vote for the winner.
That's Rs 2 crore more than he has.
"I find it difficult to manage funds," said Ahmed, who worked with various travel firms before he could fund his dream project. 
He is now knocking on whichever door he can find, including that of the government, but the response has been lukewarm.
Friends are pitching in again as is Oscar-winning sound engineer Resul Pookutty, who has done the film's sound re-design and re-mix free of cost.
Ahmed recently met Hindi film actor Aamir Khan to seek his advice.
"Aamir's Lagaan was an official entry for Oscars in 2002. He gave me a few tips and wished all success," Ahmed said.

Black flag raised aginst PM, Vijayakanth arrested

Chennai: Opposition leader, actor and DMDK president Vijayakanth who raised black flags in protest against the  Prime Minister Manmohan Singh was arrested today. DMDK leaders are unhappy with the centre's stand regarding the Mullaperiyar issue. They have accused the Prime Minister of joining hands with Kerala government against Tamil Nadu on the Mullaperiyar issue. Actor politician Vijayakanth along with more than 100 protesters raised black flag against the Prime Minister and blocked his path while he was on the way to the Raj Bhavan for talks.
Today at 9 0 clock the Prime Minister had held talks with DMK president Karunanidhi. Karunanidhi accused Kerala of spreading false news regarding the insecurity of the dam creating panic and hatred among the people of the states. He stated that Centre should ensure the safety of the Mullaperiyar dam as well as that of the people of Tamil Nadu.

നേത്രാവതിപുഴയില്‍ 4 മലയാളി വിദ്യാര്‍ത്ഥികള്‍ മുങ്ങിമരിച്ചു

മംഗലാപുരം: ഇനോളിക്കുസമീപം നേത്രാവതി പുഴയില്‍ ഒഴുക്കില്‍പെട്ട് നാല് വിദ്യാര്‍ത്ഥികള്‍ മരിച്ചു. മലപ്പുറം വേങ്ങര സ്വദേശി റിനാസ്, കാസര്‍കോട് സ്വദേശി സബാദ്, കൂത്തുപറമ്പ് സ്വദേശി സഫ് വാന്‍, നീലേശ്വരം സ്വദേശി ഷിഹാദ് എന്നിവരാണ് മരിച്ചത്. ഇന്നലെ വൈകീട്ടാണ് അപകടമുണ്ടായത്. പുഴയില്‍ വീണ പന്തെടുക്കാന്‍ പുഴയിലിറങ്ങിയപ്പോഴാണ് അപകടം. പന്തെടുക്കാനായി പുഴയില്‍ നീന്തുന്നതിനിടെ ഒഴുക്കില്‍ പെടുകയായിരുന്നു.


വിനോദയാത്രാസംഘം കുളിക്കാനിറങ്ങിയപ്പോഴാണ് ഒഴുക്കില്‍പെട്ടത്. ഇനോളിലെ ബ്യാരീസ് ഇന്‍സ്റ്റിറ്റിയൂട്ട് ഓഫ് ടെക്‌നോളജി യിലെ വിദ്യാര്‍ത്ഥികളാണ് ഇവര്‍.

മുല്ലപ്പെരിയാര്‍: ആര്‍ക്കും നിലപാടില്ലെന്ന് ആന്റണി

തൃശ്ശൂര്‍: മുല്ലപ്പെരിയാര്‍ വിഷയത്തില്‍ ഒരു രാഷ്ട്രീയ കക്ഷിക്കും വ്യക്തമായ നിലപാടില്ലെന്ന് കേന്ദ്ര പ്രതിരോധമന്ത്രി എ.കെ. ആന്റണി പറഞ്ഞു.


മുല്ലപ്പെരിയാര്‍ ഡാം പ്രശ്‌നം പരിഹരിക്കണമെന്നല്ലാതെ എങ്ങിനെ പരിഹരിക്കണമെന്ന് ആരും പറയുന്നില്ല. പ്രശ്‌നപരിഹാരത്തിന് കേന്ദ്രസര്‍ക്കാര്‍ നടത്തുന്ന ശ്രമങ്ങള്‍ ഇനിയും ഫലം കണ്ടിട്ടില്ലെന്നും എങ്കിലും ശ്രമം തുടരുകയാണെന്നും അദ്ദേഹം പറഞ്ഞു. തൃശ്ശൂരില്‍ മാധ്യമപ്രവര്‍ത്തകരുടെ ചോദ്യത്തിന് ഉത്തരം പറയുകയായിരുന്നു അദ്ദേഹം.
