Kerala bans gutka, pan masala products..

Thiruvananthapuram: Citing increasing incidence of diseases like oral cancer, the Congress-led UDF government in Kerala on Friday announced a ban on the manufacture and sale of gutka and pan masala containing tobacco in the state with immediate effect.

Announcing the decision at a press conference in Thiruvananthapuram, Chief Minister Oommen Chandy said the ban on gutka and pan masala containing tobacco and nicotine was enforced under the provisions of Food Safety and Standards Regulation Act, 2011.

Kerala is the second state to ban the use of gutka and pan masala after Madhya Pradesh.

The increasing incidence of gutka-induced diseases like oral cancer had prompted the government to ban the products, Chandy said adding the Commissioner of Food Safety (Kerala) had issued the notification banning these products on May 22.

The government would strictly enforce the ban and take strong action in case of any violation, he said.

Chandy said he had written to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh seeking a total ban on these products in the country. However, the Centre had replied last month that the states had the jurisdiction to ban gutka and pan masala under the Food Safety and Standards Regulation Act, 2011.

The notification issued by the Commissioner prohibits the manufacture, storage, distribution and sale of these products that contain tobacco and nicotine, in whatsoever name it is available in the market on Friday.

If you want to access something other than Facebook, you’ll have to pay a fee, starting at $4.95 and depending on the flight’s duration. Gogo says that Facebook is its number-one website visited by travelers, and Gogo hopes that customers will get hooked to the service during the free promotion in February.

For all those penny-pinching, world-traveling Facebook-users out there, you’re in luck: you’ll be able to check Facebook during your flight and not pay a dime if you fly during the short, sweet month of February.

Of course this means we all need to prepare ourselves for the inane status updates. Like: “I can see my house from here!” And: “Clouds… wow.”

Participating airlines–including American Airlines, Delta, United Airlines, AirTran Airways, Alaska Airlines, Virgin America, and U.S. Airways–are partnering with Gogo Inflight Internet and Ford to provide airline passengers with free Facebook access. As Mashable reports:

Nepal plane crash: 13 Indians killed; 6 survivors

  Kathmandu: A small plane owned by a private company crashed in northwest Nepal on Monday, killing 15 people including 13 Indians, an official said.

The Dornier aircraft owned by private Agni Air company was carrying 18 passengers and a crew of three on a flight from the resort town of Pokhara to Jomsom when it crashed while landing at the mountain airstrip.

'Among those killed are 13 Indians and two Nepalis,' Kathmandu airport official Mahesh Shrestha said.

Six survivors had been taken to a hospital in Pokhara and the condition of at least one of them is critical, he said.

Two Danish tourists were among those rescued.

Jomsom, about 125 km (79 miles) northwest of Kathmandu, is a gateway for trekking in the region where Mount Annapurna, the world's 10th highest mountain, is located.        

In September last year, 19 people returning after viewing Mount Everest were killed when their plane crashed in bad weather near Kathmandu.

It was not immediately clear what caused Monday's crash.

Nepal is home to eight of the world's 14 highest mountain peaks, including Mount Everest.

Tens of thousands of hikers and foreign tourists go to Mount Everest and other trekking routes to see the lofty Himalayan peaks every year.

Tourism, a key source of earning for impoverished Nepal, accounts for nearly four percent of the gross domestic product and employs tens of thousands of people. Reuters

KFC must pay $8.3m to poisoned girl in Australia

Sydney, April 27 (Reuters): Fast-food chain KFC has been ordered to

pay $8.3 million in damages to the family of an Australian girl who

was left severely brain damaged and in a wheelchair after being

poisoned by a chicken meal.

In 2005, Monika Samaan, then aged seven, her parents and her brother

were hospitalised with salmonella poisoning after eating a "Twister"

chicken wrap at a KFC restaurant near Sydney.

KFC, owned by Yum! Brands, said it was a tragic case but was "deeply

disappointed and surprised by the decision" and would appeal against

it.

Last week, a New South Wales supreme court judge ruled in favour of

the family, saying KFC had breached its duty of care to the girl.

Today, it awarded the family A$8 million in damages, as well as court

costs.

Australian media quoted their lawyer, George Vlahakis, as saying the

girl's illness had "exhausted the very limited resources of the

family".

"The compensation ordered is very much needed," Vlahakis said.
